KARACHI: Sewage ruining many roads

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 18: Though new sewerage lines are being laid along with the construction of new roads in different areas, over a dozen other arteries with deep craters still trouble motorists, cause damage to their vehicles and problems for the passers-by owing to dilapidated sewerage system.

Overflowing gutters and leaking lines have rendered Dadabhoy Nauroji Road, Mansfield Street, Mubarak Shaheed Road, Daudpota Road, Mir Karam Ali Talpur Road, a portion of Preedy Street, Rizvi Shaheed Road, Shahrah-i-Iraq, Lyari’s D.D. Chaudhry Road and many other arteries impassable. Besides giving an ugly look the areas submerged by sewage put the health of their residents at risk.

During a visit to commercial areas of Saddar, the pedestrians were seen walking in a zigzag manner to avoid sewage-filled potholes on Mir Karam Ali Talpur Road and streets adjoining Bohri Bazaar, Zaibunnisa Street, Saddar Dawakhana, Rainbow Centre and Empress Market. Besides, a number of streets in Saddar, particularly the one connecting Mir Karam Ali Talpur Road with Daudpota Road, have also worn-out as the authorities concerned have yet to address the root-cause of their destruction by overhauling the sewerage system of the town.

People residing in Jacob Lines, Bizzerta Lines and Abyssinia Lines have been facing immense difficulties in going to their workplace as the only main artery, Mubarak Shaheed Road, that connects Sarwar Shaheed Road to FTC Flyover has been lying in a dilapidated condition for months.

The affected area people said the road, which came under the jurisdiction of the cantonment board, had been giving a devastated look as it had not been levelled and carpeted once it was dug up some months ago.

Besides, a major portion of Tariq Road has developed craters owing to which thousands of motorists face problems while reaching the commercial area.

Moreover, the road that links Sharea Faisal and Allahwali Chowrangi via Sindhi Muslim Cooperative Housing Society roundabout has become bumpy since the closure of its one track towards the signal-free Sharea Faisal.

Muslimabad hydrants

Almost all streets of Muslimabad and a major road leading to Society Office and Khudadad Colony from the Quaid’s mausoleum have suffered devastation owing to frequent movement of tankers drawing water from Muslimabad hydrants.

Criticizing the authorities concerned for not shifting the two hydrants from the residential area despite repeated complaints, area people said thousands of tankers fetching water from the two hydrants daily had not only left Dadabhoy Nauroji Road and a few other roads impassable but also resulted in accidents.
