Terror suspect’s ordeal continues

By Majeed Gill

BAHAWALPUR, Sept 17: A terror suspect picked up reportedly by intelligence agencies along with her husband, brother and some other relatives three years ago for their alleged involvement in an attempt on the life of President Gen Musharraf was sent on judicial remand by a local court on Monday.

Sources said Shazia Mubashir, who belongs to Khanqah Sharif, 15km from here, had her four-year-old son in her lap when she was driven to jail.

Shazia was granted bail by an anti-terrorism court of Rawalpindi on Thursday. Due to `procedural and legal formalities,’ she could not be released the same day. When she was finally released from Adiala jail, Rawalpindi, on Friday, a police team from Sammasatta (Bahawalpur) picked her up and brought her here.

No police official was ready to speak on Shazia’s fresh arrest. Sources however said the woman was presented before a local court on Monday.

Shazia is the sister of Hafiz Muhammad Tahir, whose detention by intelligence agencies was confirmed by Hafiz Abdul Basit of Faisalabad. Basit was released by the agencies on the Supreme Court intervention last month.

Shazia, her husband Mubashir and Hafiz Tahir were arrested in Jan 2004 for their alleged involvement in an attack on Musharraf’s motorcade near Jhanda Chichi (Rawalpindi) on Dec 25, 2003.

She along with her husband was tried by the court of field general marshal in Attock and her counsel claimed that she was acquitted and handed over to police in August, 2005. Police however again arrested her to try her on terrorism charges. She was lodged in Adiala jail but her trial could not begin for unknown reasons.

On Sept 4, she along with her brother Hafiz Tahir was produced before the Supreme Court hearing missing persons case. Later, her counsel moved acquittal and bail pleas in the Rawalpindi ATC.

The ATC judge reportedly told her lawyer that he could only hear the case if military court’s orders of her acquittal were produced before him. However, he granted her bail and put off the hearing till Sept 27.

She was released from the Adiala jail but was arrested by Sammasatta police on Sept 14.

Shazia’s brother Hafiz Tahir is still in detention.

BAIL GRANTED: PML-N’s four leaders, including two MPs, were granted interim bail before arrest by district and sessions judge Maqsood Ahmed Beato.

Those granted bail till Sept 27 included MNA Makhdum Syed Ali Hassan Gilani, MPA Malik Muhammad Iqbal Channar, Ex-MNA and district president Mumtaz Ahmed Jajja and district general secretary Mahar Muhammad Iqbal.

Local police had registered a case under 16-MPO against them before the arrival of PML chief Mian Nawaz Sharif in Pakistan on Sept 10.

ACCIDENT: Two women were killed in a road accident near Channi Goth, about 100kms from here.

Abdul Malik along with his minor daughter and two women was going on his motorcycle. In an attempt to cross the main highway near Channi Goth, they were hit by a trailer. As a result, Bakhto Mai (50) and Aziz Mai (26) died on the spot.

A large number of people later blocked the national highway for several hours as the trailer escaped.
