Qayyum rapped for dividing lawyers

Published September 18, 2007

LAHORE, Sept 17: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has criticised Attorney General Malik Muhammad Qayyum for trying to divide lawyers by offering them jobs.In a statement issued here on Monday, the SCBA office-bearers said the attorney general should restrict himself to his constitutional role instead of extending the federal government’s agenda to create a rift among lawyers.

They said the government should stop squandering the national exchequer on an exercise that was both malicious and counter-productive. They asked the attorney general to transfer Rs100 million bar funds to the SCBA account immediately. “Otherwise the SCBA will hold a press conference and unearth the financial corruption done during the last year by the bar office-bearers,” they said.

LHCBA: The Lahore High Court Bar Association has expressed grief and anger over the death of Attique Ahmad Qadri advocate, who died in a hospital after being shot by unknown gunmen in front of his house.

In a statement issued here Monday, the LHCBA said earlier Raja Riaz advocate was made a victim of terrorism in broad daylight. It said it appeared as if the government was deliberately targeting lawyers to intimidate them.

It said the lawyers would quell terrorism the way they had ran a successful campaign for the independence of judiciary.—Reporter
