Investments by banks increase by Rs11bn


According to the weekly statement of position of all scheduled banks for the week ended September 1, 2007, deposits and other accounts of the scheduled banks stood at Rs3,458.480 billion, larger by Rs55.31 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs3,403.170 billion.

Commercial banks deposits showed an increase of Rs55.268 billion over the week to Rs3,446.509 billion, against preceding week’s Rs3,391.241 billion. Specialised banks deposits stood at Rs11.970 billion, against preceding week’s Rs11.929 billion, a rise of Rs0.041 billion.

Borrowings by all scheduled banks decreased during the week over preceding week’s figure. It fell to Rs366.338 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs379.476 billion, a fall of Rs13.138 billion. This was primarily due to a decline in the borrowings by commercial banks, which fell to Rs285.375 billion against previous week’s Rs298.227 billion, or by Rs12.852 billion. Borrowings by specialized banks stood at Rs80.963 billion, against preceding week’s figure of Rs81.248 billion, a fall of Rs0.285 billion.

Gross advances stood at Rs2,441.446 billion in the week under review, an increase of Rs14.687 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs2,426.759 billion. Advances by commercial banks rose to Rs2,345.636 billion against earlier week’s figure of Rs2,331.056 billion, or by Rs14.58 billion. Advances of specialised banks stood at Rs95.810 billion, higher by Rs0.107 billion over earlier week’s figure of Rs95.703 billion.

Investments of all scheduled banks increased in the week by Rs11.15 billion to Rs1,208.265 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs1,197.115 billion. Commercial banks investment rose to Rs1,194.354 billion, from earlier week’s Rs1,183.425 billion, larger by Rs10.929 billion. Specialized banks investment stood at Rs13.912 billion, against preceding week’s Rs13.691 billion, a rise of Rs0.221 billion.

Cash and balances with treasury banks of all scheduled banks rose by Rs11.076 billion during the week to stand at Rs350.302 billion against earlier week’s Rs339.226 billion. The figure for commercial banks stood at Rs347.774 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs336.818 billion, a rise of Rs10.956 billion, while of specialized banks it stood at 2.528 billion over previous week’s 2.408 billion.

Total assets of scheduled banks stood at Rs4,581.296 billion, higher by Rs61.17 billion, over preceding week’s figure of Rs4,520.126 billion. Meanwhile, commercial banks assets stood at Rs4,467.393 billion, larger by Rs62.096 billion over previous week’s figure of Rs4,405.297 billion. Specialized banks assets declined to Rs113.903 billion, or by Rs0.927 billion over previous week’s Rs114.830 billion.
