Workers take to the streets

MIANWALI, Sept 13: The workers of a cement factory blocked the factory road for two hours on Thursday and vowed to continue their protest till acceptance of their demands. It is learnt that Maple Leaf cement factory administration announced a few months ago that it would give workers seven bonuses and other benefits, but later it backed out of its promise.

Later, workers dispersed peacefully. Earlier, police tried to disperse the protesting workers, but failed. The road blockade caused problems for workers of other factories and students.

Factory Manager Malik Rabnawaz said workers’ demands were based on wrong presumptions. He said the factory was ready to give four-and-a-half bonuses to workers and 60 per cent jobs to their children. He said the factory would take those to the court who would try to damage its installations.—Correspondent
