KARACHI : ‘ME conflict may prolong’

Published September 11, 2007

KARACHI, Sept 10: There are slim chances of the resolution of the Palestinian conflict in the manner the present US administration plans to handle the issue. This was one of the many observations made by the US-based journalist and researcher, Mustafa Malik, during his lecture on “Dynamics of Palestinian-Israeli Conflict” held under the Programme on Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Department of International Relations, University of Karachi.

Citing a poll recently carried out among the US-based Palestinians, he said that 70 per cent wanted to return to their homeland while 94 per cent of them refused to accept Israel’s sovereignty over the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

He said that the Palestinian youth could have tolerated the killings of their ancestors at the hands of the Israeli forces but not the inhuman treatment meted out to them by the Israelis.

Prof Dr Moonis Ahmar, chairman of the department, said that the issue of Palestine and its solution had been debated since 1948.

Quoting a theory in this regard, he said that the world would have two democracies in the days to come i.e. Israel and Palestine.

At the end of the programme, he thanked the guest speaker and presented him with a souvenir.
