LAHORE, Sept 9: An undefeated 142 by opener Khalid Latif and Yasir Hameed’s second century in three matches propelled Pakistan ‘A’ to whitewash Australia ‘A’ 3-0 in the one-day series at the Gaddafi Stadium here on Sunday.
The home team’s dominance was achieved in convincing style as the margin of victory in the last game was six wickets with 16 balls deliveries to spare after Australia ‘A’ had piled up 331-9 in their 50 overs.
Khalid, the ex-Pakistan Under-19 captain, and Yasir (108) made the victory possible with a superb second-wicket partnership of 207 Pakistan ‘A’, who batted second in all three matches, won the first game here by eight wickets and the second in Sheikhupura by seven wickets.
Khalid, who made a quick fire 54 in the rain-hit second match at Sheikhupura, led the chase with Yasir after Taufiq Umar went cheaply for four. After a watchful beginning during which 37 runs were scored in 10 overs, both Khalid and Yasir blossomed when the asking rate went to 6.5.
The next 10 overs produced 88 runs; Khalid having got to his 50 off 49 balls with nine fours while Yasir consumed 59 balls for his half century, cracking seven boundaries. The pair plundered another 68 runs in the next 10 overs to put their team on the road of victory with the score being 193-1 in 30 overs.
But two quick blows, in the 33rd and 34th over, reduced Pakistan to 207-3. Soon after completing his century, Yasir tried to hit hard medium-pacer James Hopes but was caught by Dan Cullen.
Yasir’s 108 off 106 balls in 122 minutes included 15 boundaries and one six. The next over saw Pakistan ‘A’ skipper Faisal Iqbal bowled by Cullen for a duck.
Naved Latif, however, maintained the charge with an already well-set Khalid. The pair put on 94 amid a rally of sixes and fours, as Pakistan reached 301 when Naved was caught by David Hussey at long on off leg-spinner Cullen Bailey for 66. Naved slammed four sixes and six boundaries off 41 balls.
Man-of-the-Match Khalid and Mansoor Amjad (6), who was also the top wicket-taker in the match with five for 50, crossed the target without any further loss. Khalid’s 130-ball innings included 15 fours and two sixes.
Earlier, the Australians, put into bat, owed their score mainly due to a fine century by Chris Rogers (112 off 101 balls, 13 fours) and Luke Ronchi (67), who together put on 111 for the first wicket.
Leg-spinner Mansoor broke the partnership by removing Ronchi, caught by Naved. Ronchi hit three sixes and eight boundaries off 45 balls.
Australian skipper Adam Voges (58 off 64 balls, two fours) was the other main contributor for the visitors.
Mansoor claimed three wickets in the final over of the innings. Taufiq finished with two for 54.
Yasir, who scored 216 runs in the three games, was declared Pakistan ‘A’s Man-of-the-Series. Voges earned the award for his side with 133 runs. Both the players pocketed $1,000.
PCB chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf has announced $2,000 as cash prize for each member of the victorious Pakistan ‘A’ side.
