MUZAFFARGARH, Sept 9: An Islamabad-based NGO has arranged for the medical treatment and financial assistance of a woman of Basti Budh who suffered burns in an acid attack by her husband a week ago.

Mureed Abbas, a representative of the Acid Survivor Foundation, visited Basti Budh on Sunday and met 18-year-old Irshad Bibi — a victim of her spouse’s torment. He arranged travelling of the victim to Islamabad where she would be treated at the ASF clinic.

The visitor said the foundation would arrange for her complete treatment that included skin grafting and surgery.

Later while speaking to Dawn on phone, ASF directors Muhammad Khan Yousafzai and Valerie Yousafzai claimed they would also provide financial assistance to Irshad Bibi after her treatment. The succour would include arranging a house and business for her so that she could spend her life without any economic constraint in the future.

Ajmal threw acid on his wife Irshad Bibi on suspicion of her loose morals. On Sept 3, Irshad’s father brought her to the Nishter Hospital Multan from where she was discharged after two days. “We were sent home because we don’t afford the treatment”, the family said. The police have yet to arrest Ajmal.

The ASF representative said the foundation would also offer free legal aid to the victim so as to bring the culprit to book. The ASF, he said, would file a petition in the high court if the police did not arrest him.

The victim’s father, Ghulam Husain, a barber, said Ajmal’s family was coercing them into pardoning the culprit and settling the matter internally.
