LAHORE, Sept 7: The Punjab government is considering action against Kasur Nazim Rana Hayat Khan for, what sources claimed, his unauthorised announcement of a public holiday on Sept 10 to celebrate the announced arrival of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
The nazim reportedly declared the local holiday a few days ago.
Mr Khan is already facing a lot of problems from the government because of his attachment to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
Sources claimed that it was not specified in the Local Government Ordinance who would declare a holiday in a district. But as per a notification of the Services and General Administration Department this authority exclusively lay with the district coordination officer (DCO).
Sources said nazim allegedly violated the notification by declaring the holiday particularly for a political purpose which even the DCO could not. Public holidays could only be declared on certain local cultural events like the urs of a saint, they claimed.
Sources said under the ordinance the chief executive (chief minister) could take action against any nazim for misconduct. The declaration of the holiday was misconduct, they claimed.
