KARACHI: Tremors jolt coastline areas

Published September 7, 2007

KARACHI, Sept 6: Residents of various localities along the city’s coastline rushed out of their houses in panic after feeling several tremors first at 9:14am and then at around 7pm on Thursday.

Director-General of the Pakistan Meteorological Department in Islamabad Dr Qamaruzzaman Chaudhry told Dawn these were shocks of mild nature and their intensity on the Richter Scale was 2.9 and could be termed as “slight shocks”.

However, he explained that since their source was not close to any of the major earthquake fault lines, adding that the tremors could not be called an earthquake.

He noted that the land rocked by the slight shocks had been reclaimed or used a landfill site along the coastline. He also observed that residents of DHA, Clifton and the adjoining areas had been experiencing such tremors for some time quite frequently.
