KUWAIT CITY, Sept 6: Kuwait has said that coordination with world’s powers was necessary to protect itself from major threats and to guarantee its sovereignty.

Speaking at a symposium on relations between Kuwait and Nato, Sheikh Thamer Ali Al Sabah, the acting head of Kuwait’s National Security Bureau, said that cooperation with Nato was a required step for security in the region.

He said Kuwait was facing four major threats i.e. instability in Iraq, weapons of mass destruction (WMD), terrorism and Iran’s nuclear weapons programme.

Sheikh Thamer said that there was no doubt that weapons of mass destruction were threatening global peace and security, adding that GCC demands the entire Middle East to be free from nuclear weapons.

He said nuclear technology for peaceful purposes could be used but only under the control and regulation of the International Nuclear watchdog, the IAEA.
