KARACHI: SC takes up pensionary benefits issue

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 5: The Supreme Court asked the finance ministry and a federal attorney to file a comprehensive and definite statement in respect of the entitlement of the Urdu Dictionary Board employees to pensionary benefits within a fortnight.

A three-member bench, comprising Justices Rana Bhagwandas, Hamid Ali Mirza and Ghulam Rabbani, took up a grievance addressed by Mst Shamim Akhtar, a board employee, in the human rights jurisdiction of the court on Wednesday.

Responding to an earlier notice, a finance ministry joint secretary stated that a summary in respect of the employees’ case for pension had been sent to the prime minister.

The ministry had earlier summarily rejected board chairman Dr Rauf Parekh’s recommendation as the employees did not fall within the definition of civil servants under the Civil Servants Act.
