Three more BD academics sent to jail

DHAKA, Sept 5: Three more Bangladeshi academics were jailed on Wednesday pending trial on charges of fuelling student unrest last month that prompted the country’s army-backed government to impose a curfew.

The teachers, all from the journalism department of Rajshahi University, were arrested as they surrendered to a court after police issued warrants against them, police official said.

“The court rejected their bail plea and sent them to jail. They have been charged with breaking the emergency rules and fuelling the student protests last month,” he said.

So far eight academics have been held over the protests, which left at least one dead and dozens injured.—AFP
