ISLAMABAD, Sept 4: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has spent millions of rupees on an advertisement that misled the taxpayers regarding filing of income tax returns for the tax year 2007.

The advertisement, which was published in leading newspapers on Monday, said the last date for the filing of income tax returns was Dec 31, 2007.

An FBR spokesman admitted the error and clarified that the last date for filing income tax returns was Sept 30 for the non-corporate sector — associations of persons or individuals.

He said the date has not been extended for both non-corporate and corporate return filers for 2007.

He said the last date for non-corporate returns is Sept 30, which would be submitted manually or through e-filing, which is optional. For corporate taxpayers, the e-filing of returns was mandatory. The last date for filing returns was September 30 or December 31, 2007, whichever is applicable.
