KARACHI: Officials told to file final charge-sheet: Boiler case

By A Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 3: The judicial magistrate-12, Central, Abdul Zahoor Chandio, on Monday directed both the investigation officer in the boiler blast case and the inspector of the boiler inspection wing of the directorate of industries to submit a final charge-sheet against the accused Akhtar Hussein Baloch, owner of the towel-dyeing and bleaching factory where nine men had been killed and 25 injured as a result of a boiler explosion on July 24, 2007.

The IO appeared in court, but failed to submit a complete charge-sheet.

He submitted an application to the court seeking three days for the submission of the charge-sheet in the case.

He said that the delay had been caused due to the non-submission of the report by the inspector of the boiler inspection wing of the directorate of industries, Anwar Ali.

The court fixed Sept 7 for the submission of the complete charge-sheet and also directed the inspector of the Boiler Inspection Wing to submit his findings to the IO prior to the next hearing.

The IO told Dawn that he had already completed his investigation, but the officials of the relevant departments had not yet submitted their findings.

“I have personally requested the inspector of the boiler inspection wing to submit the file, who had promised to complete the work within a day or two,” the IO added.

The IO had submitted the interim charge-sheet to the court on Aug 9, but the judicial magistrate directed the IO to submit the final charge sheet so that the case could be processed further.

The court had fixed Aug 29 for the submission of a complete charge-sheet, but the IO did not appear in court and had submitted an application stating that his absence was due to his preoccupation with the investigation of another criminal case.

The JM had lodged a complaint against the IO, Mohammad Ilyas, of Taimuria police station to the senior superintendents of police, Central and West, on Aug 30 for not complying with the court’s orders.

NED couple

The judicial magistrate, Central, Abdul Zahoor Chandio, on Monday issued a show-cause notice to the station investigation officer of the Taimuria police station in the murder case of a newly-wed couple.

The magistrate ordered the SIO to appear in court on Sept 7 and give details about the progress made in the investigation of the murder case.

The investigation officer, despite a lapse of over three weeks, had not appeared in court so far, a source privy to the court told Dawn.

According to the FIR No 391/07, registered in the Taimuria police station, Mohammad Azeem Shaikh and Beenish were married on the night of Aug 10 at a marriage hall in North Nazimabad and the groom’s family had found the couple dead in their bedroom on the following day.

The police had shifted the bodies to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

SMC students

The additional district and sessions judge-III, South, Sultan Mohammad Awan, on Monday granted bail to 17 students, allegedly involved in a recent clash at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, against the surety bonds of Rs50,000 each.

The students of Sindh Medical College were arrested following the death of an activist Farhan Butt in a clash between the Islami Jamiat Talba and the Punjabi Students Association on Aug 25.
