Faisalabad Whites salvage draw, move into quarter-finals

LAHORE, Sept 2: Faisalabad Whites salvaged a 2-2 draw with group ‘B’ leaders Punjab Medical College to move into national under-18 football championship quarter-finals on Saturday.

NWFP and Afghan Club also reached the last-eight stage after convincing victories to join Faisalabad Yellows, Pak Friends Club, Model Town Club, and PMC in the quarter-finals which start on Monday.

Needing a draw against PMC, Faisalabad Whites went 1-0 ahead through Wasif, who struck in the 25th minute, and found the cage for his double two minutes later.

PMC bounced back to reduce the margin through Ali Ishtiaq seconds before the halftime whistle, while Haider slammed home the equalizer in the 73rd minute.

Afghan Club thrashed Azad Jammu and Kashmir 5-0.

Kalimullah opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Mohammad Naseem made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute. Mohammad Khan was on target a minute later, while Abdul Nafay slotted home the fourth in the 68th minute and Mahmood Ali finished off with a 79th-minute strike.

NWFP defeated Northern Areas 3-0.

Shakeel’s 34th-minute goal was followed by Badshah Gul’s strike in the 81st minute and Rehan completed the tally six minutes later.

In another match having no significance, Islamabad beat holders Balochistan 4-1. Hassan Raza grabbed the lead for the winners in the seventh minute. Qasim netted the second in the 28th minute and again came into action in the 80th minute, while Wasim sealed the fate of the match when he struck the fourth in the 88th minute.

Abdul Jabbar scored the consolation goal for Balochistan in the last minute of the game.

Monday’s fixtures (quarter-finals):

Faisalabad Yellows v NWFP; PMC v Model Town; Afghan Club v Pak Friends; Karachi v Faisalabad Whites.
