Nazimuddin stars for Bangladesh

NAIROBI, Sept 1: A composed 43 from Nazimuddin and a quick 36 from skipper Mohammad Ashraful followed up a good bowling display as Bangladesh coasted to a five-wicket win over Kenya in the second game of the Twenty20 Quadrangular tournament on Saturday.

Kenya, put in to bat, were restricted to 138 for 7, with Mashrafe Mortaza, Farhad Reza and Abdur Razzak picking two wickets apiece.

In reply, Bangladesh, chasing 139, opened with Nazimuddin, playing his first international game and Tamim Iqbal. Tamim fell soon to Peter Ongondo for 11.

Aftab Ahmed made 17 in his six-ball stint at the crease before Nazimuddin was joined by Ashraful and the two put on 26 runs in 25 balls before Nazimuddin fell for 43 to Jimmy Kamande.

Ashraful though continued the run-scoring, and when he was dismissed by Ongondo in the 14th over for 36, Bangladesh needed only another 24 runs from 40 balls.

A sedate unbeaten 19-ball 17 from Alok Kapali saw Bangladesh through, the victory coming with 14 balls to spare.

Summarised scores:

KENYA 138-7 in 20 overs (T. Mishra 38, S.O. Tikolo 24, D.O. Obuya 23, T.M. Odoyo 22; Abdur Razzak 2-22, Mashrafe Mortaza 2-29, Farhad Raza 2-34); BANGALESH 139-5 in 17.4 overs (Nazimuddin 43, Mohammad Ashraf 36; P.J. Ongondo 2-21).—Agencies
