Lawyer also in race for president slot

By Our Correspondent

SAHIWAL, Aug 31: A high court lawyer from Sahiwal has announced that he will also contest the elections for the president seat.

In a press release issued here on Friday, lawyer Mian Asghar Ali Gurpuri said that Gen Pervez Musharraf during a public address on Feb 19, 2000, had asked the nation to elect the army general as president.

He said he had remained a staunch supporter of the president till May 2003 on account of his seven-point agenda, but he (Musharraf) had bitterly disappointed the nation.

Mr Gurpuri said he hoped that parliamentarians would cast their vote in his favour.

BOYCOTTED: Lawyers of the District Bar Association boycotted court proceedings and demanded the arrest of police officers responsible for torching lawyers’ rally on May 4.

The protesting lawyers also hoisted a black flag atop the bar building.

Talking to reporters, DBA President Sheikh Muhammad Usman and Secretary-General Mian Islamul Haq said that they would continue their protest till the arrest of the accused policemen.

STRIKE: On the appeal of the All Pakistan Clerks Association (APCA), clerks observed a strike to press for the acceptance of their demands.

People had to return disappointedly as officials in agriculture, irrigation, education, revenue, health and cooperative departments did not perform any work.
