ISLAMABAD, Aug 30: Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry has said that the apex court was exercising the constitutional suo motu power in the interest of the poor and deserving cases.

Addressing delegations of various bar associations here on Thursday, he observed that the courts should use their authority within the ambit of law to provide relief to the common man.

He said the judiciary would continue to uphold the law and Constitution.

He said the civil society had played an important role in the struggle for judiciary’s supremacy and now it was for the judiciary to provide better service through quick disposal of cases.

“We have to redouble our efforts,” he said, adding that rights of the common man should be protected and they should be made aware of their rights.

The chief justice said that each case would be decided on merit and the supremacy of the Constitution should be maintained.

Earlier, Registrar Supreme Court Dr Faqir Hussain said that the country had seen over the past few months a disciplined, organised and peaceful movement for the supremacy of law and Constitution.
