BD honours Nobel laureate

DHAKA, Aug 30: Bangladesh has released a commemorative postage stamp in honour of Nobel laureate and micro-credit pioneer Muhammad Yunus.

The 10 taka stamp and first day cover were unveiled by the head of the country's military-backed government Fakhruddin Ahmed on Wednesday, the state-run BSS news agency said.

Yunus and his Grameen Bank, which specialises in lifting people out of extreme poverty by giving them small loans, were jointly awarded the Nobel peace prize last October.

Known as the “banker to the poor,” Yunus's lending formula has been replicated around the world. Earlier this year, the former economics professor abandoned a plan to launch his own political party.—AFP
