Tribe signs peace deal

GHALANAI, Aug 27: The Haleemzai tribe of Mohmand Agency entered into a peace agreement with the government pledging neither to provide shelter to any foreigner nor to allow any militant activity in the area.

The agreement, the first of its kind in the agency, was signed at a jirga attended by around 80 Haleemzai elders. The tribe agreed to pay Rs2 million as fine in case of violation the agreement.

The agreement binds the tribesmen to stop activities of people supporting foreigners in any way and decided to demolish their houses and fine them Rs500,000. The violator would also be expelled from the area. The tribesmen declared that they would not take part in any anti-state activity.

The jirga was attended by four clans of Haleemzai-Hamzakhel, Kadikhel, Wali Baik and Kamali Halemzai. The tribesmen who signed the agreement included Malik Hidayatullah, Malik Rehman, Malik Mumber, Haji Ameer Nawaz, Malik Mohammad Ali, Malik Doran Bacha, Malik Bukht Munir and Malik Sahibdad.
