GUJRANWALA, Aug 27: A high level meeting of parliamentarians and police has expressed satisfaction over the law and order situation, claiming that crime graph in the district is moving downward owing to the coordination of MPs.

The meeting was presided over by City Police Officer DIG Khadim Husain Bhatti here on Monday while minister for state Shahid Akram Bhinder, MNA Imranullah Chaudhry, provincial minister Rana Shamshad Ahmad Khan, MPAs Chaudhry Nasir Cheema, Akmal Saif Chattha, Ashref Kamboh, Engineer Ashraf Butt, Shagufta Anwer and other senior officers were present.

The DIG said the coordination between police and parliamentarians proved a successful strategy that helped decrease crime rate in the district.

The parliamentarians assured that they would continue their cooperation with the police.

DEPORTEES: The federal investigation agency (FIA) on Monday brought over 65 people here who had been deported from Turkey.

Reports said Iran-Turkey officials had arrested them when they were crossing the border to enter Greece a few months ago. Later, they were deported after three to four months of detention.

On receiving information, an FIA team, led by additional director Husain Asgher, reached Islamabad airport and arrested them.

The deportees belonged to Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Dinga and Kharian. The agency was interrogating them about their agents. Mr Asgher claimed that about 3,000 Pakistanis were still in jails of Turkey on charges of crossing the border illegally for the last several months.

FIREWORKS BANNED: The City District Government Gujranwala on Monday imposed a ban on the sale of fireworks under Section 144 on the eve of Shab-i-Barat.

A number of shopkeepers are allegedly selling fireworks to their customers during night. The district nazim has ordered the police to conduct raids and curb sale of fireworks.

Meanwhile, DIG Khadim Husain on Monday held a meeting of almost all SHOs and other senior officers at his office and directed them to arrest shopkeepers and customers following their involvement in sale or display of fireworks. He also directed deployment of police commandos at all mosques and imambargahs to avert any untoward incident on the eve of Shab-i-Barat.

STRIKE: The low-paid employees of government and semi-government departments will observe a complete strike on Tuesday (today) for the acceptance of their demands.

This was stated by All Pakistan Clerks Association (APCA) divisional president Tahir Mahmood here on Monday.
