18 killed in Helmand

KANDAHAR, Aug 26: Soldiers killed a dozen suspected Taliban late on Saturday in Helmand, the US-led coalition said on Sunday, as locals said several civilians were killed or wounded.

The coalition denied any civilian casualties in the fighting.

One village elder said 18 people, among them women and children, were killed when war planes struck as a wedding was under way. “Twenty-two were injured,” the elder, Atta Mohammad, told AFP.

Afghan authorities said they had no information about the incident.

A resident of the area, Dad Mohammad, said he had helped take seven wounded people to hospital in Lashkar Gah. One of the women had died, he said.—AFP
