ISLAMABAD, Aug 25: The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mr Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, on Saturday observed that organs of the state must work independently and desist from encroaching on areas of the others.

“Let the rule of law and supremacy of the Constitution be there. Let all the institutions work independently and everything will be normal.

“Encroachments in one another’s area create problems. Everyone should be allowed to do his duties,” he said while addressing the fifth roll-signing ceremony of advocates of the Supreme Court held in the Supreme Court building here.

The chief justice said there was even more responsibility on the judiciary now, but it was ready to deliver. He held out an assurance that the judiciary would come up to expectations of the people.

He said the Supreme Court was receiving approximately 600 applications daily about human rights and cases of public interest.

He said to deal with such a large number of cases was a tough job, still the top court was trying its best not to let the people down.

He asked high courts and lower courts to apply their respective laws to decrease the burden of cases on the Supreme Court, as people from far-flung areas had been approaching the apex court for redressing their grievances.

Referring to the case of missing people, he said a man had been missing for the past three years and he was released on the apex court’s order. Such actions of the Supreme Court, he said, had raised the confidence of the people.
