Sher-i-Punjab tipped to dominate feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Aug 25: A competitive-looking six-event card will be contested during the 17th day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday evening.

Four races will be held over the sprinting distance of 1,000 metres while the remaining two will be staged over 1,200 metres. In all, 54 runners have been accepted for the half a dozen events barring last-minute withdrawals.

The feature event, the Raiwind Plate, a class four division one and two combined handicap race to be gone over 1,200 metres has only six runners. It looks like a competition between three, namely, Sher-i-Punjab, Baker’s View and Moj Mayla.

Sher-i-Punjab, a four-year-old colt from Polinesso out-of-Shady Burnish, is a pedigreed colt and has run twice during the last season, placed second on his maiden appearance and then ran off the frame in the second. Since then he has remained off the course.

Bay horse Moj Mayla ran fifth on Sunday last in a race where Baker’s View also ran on his maiden appearance. He is a good-looking animal. On bloodline, Sher-i-Punjab seems to be enjoying an advantage over the rest. This will be the fifth race of the day.

The sixth and supporting event has six runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals. Three of them have been running prominently. They are: Turmp Coup, Stride To Moment and Shah Pari. On handicap Trump Coup and Shah Pari should fight it out. This is a class five division two handicap race to be contested over 1.200 metres.

The fourth race, Jhang Plate, class VII division 1, over 1.000 metres has eight runners. Of them three come into reckoning on recent form and performances. They are: Ahsan The Great, Mannan Prince and The News.

The first two named have won a race each convincingly while the third finished off the frame after his rider had a fall during the race in his last outing.

The third race has 10 runners. On chance are: Blu’s Wendy, Black King, Mama Mia and Shah Rani. They should fight for top honours.

The second race has the biggest field comprising 14 runners but for last-minute withdrawals. Four of them look good in the contest for supremacy. They are: Simoom, Rose, Dillagi and Issabella. On classification Simoom has a slight edge over the others.

The first race starts at 5.00pm.
