LAHORE, Aug 23: The provincial metropolis received downpour for the third consecutive day on Thursday with weather experts forecasting more showers during the next 24 hours.

The local meteorological office recorded 28mm of rain at its observatory and 11mm at the airport.

According to the Met report, a monsoon low over southern Rajasthan has moved towards northwest and is affecting southern Punjab. The monsoon current from the Arabian sea is reaching Punjab up to 7,000 feet, it informs, adding that the weather pattern is likely to cause widespread rain in southern Punjab, upper Sindh and Balochistan and scattered rain in Kashmir and northern Punjab.

Chief Meteorologist Shaukat Ali Awan told this news agency that the current rain-generating system was likely to dissipate after a day. He said there were no chances of flood in any major river as rains were lashing areas below the catchments of rivers and were intermittent, sporadic and localised.

However, he warned, the possibility of flooding/inundation of low-lying areas of some major cities could not be ruled out because of a lack of efficient drainage system.

“These cities have sewerage facilities, but no efficient drainage system and heavy rainfall may result in choking leading to inundation of low-lying areas in urban centres”.—APP
