Australia dominate as Lauterstein, Lenton clinch gold
NARASHINO (Japan), Aug 22: Reigning world champion Libby Lenton of Australia and compatriot Andrew Lauterstein posted victories at the International swim meet here on Wednesday.
Lenton, who won five gold medals at this year’s world swimming championships in Melbourne, clocked a time of 53.58 seconds in the women’s 100-metre freestyle to finish ahead of compatriot Cate Campbell, who clocked 54.70.
China’s Zhu Yingwen was third in 54.89.
In the men’s 100-metre freestyle, Lauterstein posted a time of 49.38 to edge compatriot Matthew Targett by .09 seconds.
American Nick Brunelli finished third with a time of 49.54.
Australian swimmers also posted victories in the men’s and women’s 4x200-metre freestyle relays.
In other races, Athens Olympic gold medalist Otylia Jedrzejczak overtook Australian world champion Jessicah Schipper over the final 50 metres to win the women’s 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.15.
It was Jedrzejczak’s second medal of the meet, adding to the silver she won in the 400 freestyle on Tuesday.
Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe took top honours in the women’s 100-metre backstroke with a time of 59.85, ahead of Japan’s Reiko Nakamura, who touched the wall in 1:00.58.
Riaan Schoeman of South Africa breezed to victory in the men’s 400-metre individual medley with a time of 4:15.41, almost two seconds ahead of runner-up Pawel Korzeniowski of Poland.
