Shujaat says ready to be led by Fazl

By Ahmed Hassan

ISLAMABAD, Aug 21: Pakistan Muslim League President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvaiz Elahi on Tuesday held a 25-minute meeting with Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Maulana Fazlur Rahman in his suite in the parliament lodges.

It was their second meeting with the Maulana, which they wanted to keep secret but media men got wind of it.

The two had met Maulana Fazlur Rahman, who is also the secretary-general of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), in Lahore a couple of days ago.

While the Chaudhrys termed the meeting a routine affair held to inquire after the Maulana’s health, the JUI leader refused to dilate on what transpired at the meeting.

Later, in a statement Chaudhry Shujaat said: “We are ready to be led by the Maulana to lower the political temperature in the supreme national interest.”

The MMA leader said he had made it clear to the Chaudhrys that he would never support any unconstitutional step of the regime or president’s re-election in uniform and would remain part of the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM).

Meanwhile, MMA chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed has said that efforts were being made to create rift in the religious alliance through various tactics, but it would remain intact. He said he was unaware of the details of the Fazl-Shujaat meeting.
