Indians dominate last-eight stage in ITF tennis

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Aug 21: Three more seeded players – two boys and a girl – met their waterloo on the second day of the main round of the ITF juniors ranking tennis tournament at Karachi Club on Tuesday.

Pakistan’s sixth seed, Yasir Khan was knocked out straight 6-4, 6-4 by outsider Mandeep Yadav while eighth seed Sameer Paranjape went down 6-7, 3-6 to fellow countryman Sumeet Shinde.

Mandeep and Sumeet are among six Indians who have made it to the last eight stage, the other two being a Pakistani and a Thai.

India’s unseeded Ratnika Batra cut Pakistan’s top player and third seed Sarah Mahboob to size handing 6-4, 6-2 defeat on her way to the quarter-finals.

“It was my unforced errors which cost me the match and an early exit from the singles event,” a dejected Sarah told Dawn after the match.

Ranked 879 in the world, Sarah said she would try her best to make up for the loss in the doubles. The Sarah/Inayat Khosla pair are top seed in the doubles.

Second seed, Soniya Dayal, who arrived from Mumbai on Monday evening, couldn’t have a feel of the court as she got a walkover against local player Eman Malik. The latter informed the organisers on the phone that she was indisposed.

Natasha Afridi, a Japanese national but Pakistani by origin, downed Mehreen Izhar 6-2, 6-1 while Asha Mohan disposed off Anoosha Aslam 6-2, 6-1.

The top two seed boys, Shiva Sangwan and Chandril Sood, continued their winning run and propelled into the quarter-finals. The former got the better of compatriot Dody Barani 6-2, 6-2 while the latter struggled to beat Pakistan’s Heera Ashiq 6-4, 6-3.

The promising Nasir Mushtaq, also powered his way into the last eight when he edged wildcard Ahmed Aslam 6-1, 6-2 with ease. Nasir has recently undergone a month long training in the US and featured in the ITF juniors’ circuit in Syria and Jordan. Thailand’s Nuttorn Tanchainant whipped lucky loser Abid Ali 6-4, 6-2.

India’s Sood brothers – Chandril and Lakshit – are seeded on top in boys’ doubles. They are followed by Yasir Khan/ Ashiq (Pakistan). The two pairs got a bye in the first round, which was completed on Tuesday.

The girls’ doubles first round matches will be played on Wednesday.
