MUZAFFARABAD, Aug 16: An activist of the National Students Federation (NSF) was killed and several others were injured when they were hit by bad whether while they were on a glacier linking the Neelum valley with the Northern Areas, said a party leader here on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Sardar Amjad Khan, 17, a resident of Jandali village in Poonch district.
He was studying and living with his family in Karachi.
NSF spokesman Zulfiqar Baig told Dawn that he died due to height-related breathing problem after a severe storm and icy winds hit the group of over 100 NSF activists atop the Shonthar Pass.
Around 102 activists of the NSF had left the AJK capital on August 13 for Kel, in the upper belt of the Neelum valley, as part of the Wehdat-i-Kashmir (integrity of Kashmir) rally.
In a press release issued on Thursday, an army spokesman said that the trapped youths were evacuated by troops deployed in the area and were provided food and medical treatment in Kel.
