Naseeb gallops away with Independence Day Cup

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Aug 14: Showing great endurance, seven-year-old bay Naseeb overcame the smallest field in a late burst to lift the prestigious Independence Day Cup as jockey Ghulam Shabbir II set two new marks in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Tuesday.

Running on the heels of filly Abhi Abhi and mare Makina in the one mile race, he went past his rivals just a furlong before the finishing post to register a three-and-a-half length win.

Favourite filly Big Show let down the punters and completed the frame as the field was reduced to four following the withdrawal of King Of Sanghar.

The winner of Derby at Lahore in the past, Naseeb, which belongs to the stable of Rajars, was saddled by Mushtaq Ali Khan and galloped home by Kashif Qamar. This is the second time Kashif had won the Independence Day crown as he piloted Reformer to victory seven years back.

The schedule of the Independence Day Cup was slightly changed by the organisers.

The Pakistan 60th Anniversary Cup ended in a blaze of glory for second favourite Sahibzadi, a three-year-old filly, when she stormed to a facile six-length victory over favourite filly Taiz Per with rider Ghulam Shabbir in the saddle.

Earlier, rider Shabbir presented The Kingree Lodge Performance Cup to Syed Sadruddin Shah and The Sanghar Cup to Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara.

Sadruddin’s two-year bay filly Claim To Victory posted a magnificent 10-length victory to register her maiden win while Pir Pagara’s filly Sugar Sweet edged out Mr Mention Not by three lengths after colt Royal King was withdrawn.

Eager Saint, Closing Argument and Gorella, who were nowhere throughout the year, also emerged victorious under rider Shabbir which is an eye-opener.

Riders Nasir and M. Yousuf sprinted colt Drem Rose and Rokara to glory in the other two races.

Rider Shabbir added two feathers to his cap by picking up spoils in six of the total nine races including three cups. Neither has any rider won six races in a day nor three cups, an official of KRC confided to Dawn.
