KARACHI: Two killed as violence erupts in Qasba

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 14: Two young men were killed and at least six vehicles were torched on Tuesday when violence erupted in Qasba Colony after an accident involving a rickshaw and a truck.

Eyewitnesses said unknown miscreants opened indiscriminate fire following a brawl between the operators of the truck, carrying fresh milk, and the rickshaw driver.

They said the miscreants also set fire to six vehicles, including two yellow cabs and a pick-up.

The Orangi Town police said tension gripped the area following the altercation between the rickshaw driver and the truckers. They said the situation had become violent before the police reached the spot.

The police said that a heavy contingent of law-enforcers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

They said the shopkeepers pulled down their shutters and vendors vanished from the area as unknown culprits resorted to indiscriminate firing.

The police identified the victims as Mansoor, son of Mehmood, and Munawwar, son of Shakoor Ali. They said the two men were killed in the firing and their bodies were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Fire-brigade sources said two fire engines rushed to the spot; however, they said, the vehicles had been gutted completely before the fire engines reached the spot.

Traffic accident

Two children were killed and another injured when they were knocked down by a minibus late on Monday night in PIB Colony.

Witnesses said the three victims, aged between eight and 12 years, were rushed to the Liaquat National Memorial Hospital where Abid and Shahid died and Muzammil was stated to be in a precarious condition.

The witnesses said angry people beat up the driver of the minibus and later handed him over to police.

The children, residents of PIB Colony, were stated to have been celebrating Independence Day and they were hit by the minibus near Askari Park while crossing the road.

Area police said the driver of the minibus was arrested and the police also impounded his vehicle.
