PESHAWAR: Grand jirga declaration termed a landmark for peace

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Aug 13: The Pakistan People’s Party (Sherpao) on Monday termed the declaration of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Peace Jirga a landmark document for restoration of peace and stability in the region.

Addressing a workers’ meeting here at the party’s secretariat, PPP-S’s provincial secretary Sikandar Hayat Sherpao said the joint jirga had laid a solid foundation for combating terrorism and other security-related problems. He said the jirga was a historic event which would help bring sustainable peace to the two countries. He said: “The credit goes to PPP chief Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao for having successfully organised a historic gathering in Kabul. Mr Sherpao has performed a difficult task to bring divergent views to the jirga which will play a vital role in the region.”

He said it showed the sincerity of the PPP leadership for the cause of the Pukhtun as the success of the jirga would greatly benefit them.

Criticising the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal for staying away from the jirga, he said their credentials as champions of Islam had been exposed. He said the MMA’s refusal to attend the event had proved its insincerity towards the two countries. The MMA had grabbed votes in the name of Islam, but failed on all scores, he added.

He alleged that the MMA had adopted negative stances on all issues and caused irreparable losses to the poor in the province. He claimed that every sector in the province was on the decline as no solid strategy had been adopted to improve the infrastructure and to expedite the pace of economic development.

He said the PPP-S was re-organised on democratic lines and the party would work for the betterment of the masses. He said the party had extended its support to the incumbent federal government in the larger interest of the nation.
