HARIPUR, Aug 10: A driver was shot dead by two carlifters when he resisted their bid to deprive him of a van here on Friday. Officials of the Ghazi police station said that two people, Afzaal and Shamim, hired a van (LXF-4593) from Haripur to Sirikot.

When the van reached near Khiroch village, some 21km from here, the two men tried to hijack the vehicle from the driver.

When he resisted the bid the armed men shot him in the head and he died on the spot.

The deceased was identified as Liaquat.

Police arrested the fleeing accused and claimed to have recovered pistols from them.

SUICIDE: Two young men committed suicide in different parts of the district on Friday.

According to Abdul Qayum his son, Abdul Rab, 20, locked himself in the room and shot at his temple with 30 bore pistol.

When the family members came to know about the suicide, the injured succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The reason behind the suicide could not be ascertained.

A case in this connection was lodged with the Ghazi police.

The second suicide was reported from Bandi Sehran village in the Kotnajibullah police area.According to reports, Mumtaz, 17, son of Ghulam Rasool, hanged himself from a fan over unknown reasons.

Police record said some 25 people, including seven women, committed suicide in the 2006 year.

Some 104 people, including 26 women, were among those killed themselves from 2002 to 2004 over one or the other reasons in different parts of the Haripur district.
