GUJRANWALA, Aug 9: Lawyers, opposition political leaders and civil society groups warned on Thursday that they would begin a protest movement against the government if it imposes an emergency in the country.

Speaking at a meeting here, District Bar Association President Ilyas Rehan and General-Secretary Amir Munir Bagri, former federal minister Ghulam Dastgir Khan, engineer Khurram Dastagir, former provincial minister Usman Ibrahim, Pakistan People’s Party lawmaker Chaudhry Imtiaz Safdar, member of the Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Zahid Mehmood, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal leader Bilal Qudret and Pakistan Tehrik Insaaf leader Chaudhry Khalid Zafar said the government was afraid of its defeat in the election therefore it was trying to impose emergency in the country.

CORPS COMMANDER: Gujranwala Corps Commander Waseem Ahmed Ashraf visited troops in the field area around Sialkot and witnessed a joint exercise there on Thursday. According to an official press release, Ashraf praised the troops for their training standard and high morale. Talking to troops informally, the corps commander underlined the need for rigorous and mission-oriented training.
