KARACHI, Aug 8: Three-year-old bay filly Sugar Sweet overcame a bad patch by sprinting to glory as colt Mr Mention Not who was on course for a hat-trick was withdrawn at the last moment in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Wednesday.

Installed as the hot favourite in the absence of Mr Mention Not, Sugar Sweet edged mare Princess Rozi by 12 ½ lengths and won hands down after finishing off the board in the last two outings.

Filly Hi Darling finished six lengths behind to grab third place while colt Shah Pasand completed the frame crossing the finishing post a further one-and-a-half lengths away.

It was a moment of rejoicing for the trio — owner Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara, rider Zaki Zaki and trainer Allah Judrio — as they completed a double.

Earlier, Sugar Sweet’s stable mate 11-year-old bay mare Priceless galloped to a facile seven lengths victory over colt Shah Sawar to claim the opener.

At least three outsiders emerged victorious out of the six races drawn for the day.

Jockey Arshad registered his 15th win of the season when he stormed favourite filly Make Millions to a six lengths victory over Lucky Boss.

Mare Sweet Grandy pulled off the first upset of the day when she outpaced favourite mare Mrs Jack by four-and-a-half lengths in the second race.

Sweet Grandy has not been impressive in her recent runs and her out of a blue win has raised quite a few eye brows.

Similarly, un-fancied filly Sahib Zadi registered her maiden win when she toppled another filly Green Rose by two lengths. Filly Sweetie Pie who was backed initially as the favourite failed to find a place on the board.

Five-year-old bay Jack In The Box outshined favourite filly Sweet Smile by four lengths to pick up the feature event.

Filly Kat Mandu who completed the frame was awarded third position as Arab Hi Arab was relegated for offence and its rider M. Yousuf fined Rs10,000 for cheating. He carried lesser weight instead of nine pounds and five stones.
