Minister sees no hindrance in re-election in uniform

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Aug 7: Federal Law Minister Wasi Zafar has claimed that under the Constitution and existing laws, there is no hindrance in the president’s re-election in uniform.

In a statement issued here, he said that according to prevalent judgments of superior courts, the disqualification with regard to members of parliament did not apply in case of the president and governors.

To upset a previous judgment or overrule the same, a larger bench has to be constituted as five judges of the apex court had held that disqualifications with regard to parliamentarians did not apply in case of governors and the president.

The minister claimed that under the Constitution, it was obligatory on the present assemblies to elect the president because the election had to take place before expiry of terms of the assemblies.
