SC takes suo motu notice of karo-kari case


ISLAMABAD, Aug 4: Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry has taken a suo motu notice of a karo-kari incident and directed the IGP Sindh to submit a report. According to a press release issued here on Saturday, the chief justice had taken the action on a press clipping appearing in a local daily and fixed the case for August 16.

Ms Majeedan had been accused of adultery and declared a kari by local landlord Ali Gohar Chachar in a jirga in Ranwti village of district Ghotki.

Ms Majeedan and her brother Abdul Majeed rejected the allegations.

They alleged said that the landlord and his henchmen had made their lives miserable and were giving them death threats.

The woman also alleged that two months back she was attacked by Abdul Sattar Chachar in which she suffered bullet and axe injuries on her arm and head. She urged the chief justice to help her out.

After the suo motu notice, the Ranwati police arrested more than 35 persons who had participated in the jirga headed by landlord Chachar. Police registered cases against them.—APP/PPI
