KARACHI: Citizens endure another day of power cuts

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 4: Citizens continued to suffer at the hands of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) as the power utility failed to remove cable faults rendering many areas without electricity for more than 48 hours.

Power supply to Shamsi Society was snapped around 10am on Friday and the residents were condemned to live without electricity until 3am on Saturday. After about four hours, electricity supply again got suspended and was not restored till the filing of this report.

Residents complained that no one from electricity complaint number 118 was responding and if by chance someone at the complaint centre did answer the phone, he behaved very rudely and in a humiliating manner.

“We do not have a drop of water and children are suffering from diarrhoea. Many people have been sent to hospitals for treatment. Our electrical appliances have been damaged due to low voltage and fluctuations before the prolonged outages,” said a resident of the locality. Prolonged power cuts were also reported from many other parts of the city.

While the problem of generation and distribution persisted, the utility has further restructured the business operations and distribution group on Saturday.

Restructuring

The business operations and distribution system will be headed by Syed Tanzeem Hussain Naqvi. The arrangement will have director operations (Jameel Gul), one deputy director for 11kV networks (Zaheer H. Rizvi) and one deputy director operation LT networks (Sajjad H. Shah).

Each of these deputy directors will have 10 general managers for each region. The number of regions had been raised from three to five but Mr Naqvi said that the number had been doubled and many people were being promoted to take up the responsibility.

The business operations groups will be responsible for activities related to billing operations (industrial, commercial and residential customers), revenue protection, metering and faulty meter replacement, reconnection/disconnection, revenue collections, call centre (118) and related activities.

The distribution group will be responsible for 11kVA/LT networks operations and related activities including approval of below 50kW new connections requests. It will also be responsible for the implementation of area system improvement schemes to address overloading of HT/LT systems.

A monitoring and performance group has been created to oversee the performance in the areas of billing operations, recoveries, revenue protection, metering /FMR and RC/DC activities.

The projects, planning and construction group will be responsible for all projects related to HT/LT distribution network and approval of above 50kW new connections request and its execution. Recoveries and government debt group will be responsible for collection of old debt.
