KARACHI, Aug 4: Civil rights campaigner Syed Mohammad Iqbal Kazmi on Saturday submitted bail applications to the court of judicial magistrate-4, South, stating that all the cases were registered by police just to victimise him.
He claimed to have published investigative reports in his weekly newspaper against police officials and some elected people, who in retaliation had registered what he described as fake cases against him.
JM Ghulam Murtaza Baloch fixed Aug 6 for the hearing of the application and issued a notice to the district attorney for arguments on it.
Mr Kazmi submitted another bail application to the court of judicial magistrate, East, in the other three cases against him.
JM Shamsuddin Junejo fixed Aug 10 for hearing and issued a notice to the district attorney to attend the court for arguments on the bail application.
The accused, Iqbal Kazmi, has not hired any counsel and is appearing in person in all the courts. He is facing charges of giving dud cheques to people in various business deals in 2006.
He was arrested on June 12 at his residence in Korangi by police in cases of cheating.
The police, he said, had earlier shown only five cases against him registered at the Al-Falah and Darakhshan police stations, while another case against him was kept secret.
He said the sixth case was shown when the court sought the record of all the cases again him.
He said the last case about a dud cheque for Rs22,000 was registered at the Al-Falah police station on June 20, 2007 by a transporter, Abdul Hakeem.
He said the cheque was shown to be given on June 20, 2006, while the case was registered after one year which, he said, was totally baseless and aimed at keeping him behind bars.
Mr Kazmi alleged that DSP Zahid Hussain and SIO Munir Ahmed Chandio were working against him, adding that the police officials were involved in the kidnapping and beating up of his wife and relative Mohammad Imaran in the Defence police limits on Aug 1.
He said the Sindh High Court had directed the police to treat him as a B-class prisoner, but the order had not been followed.
“Instead of handcuffs, we are tied with chains and dragged along in a group of six to eight men,” he said.
He said despite an order of the SHC the police officials had failed to provide security to his family, and his wife was still receiving threats over the telephone.
His wife Saadia Kazmi said she was receiving life threats through telephone numbers 8253155 and 8323507.
