KARACHI, Aug 4: An anti-terrorism court on Saturday issued black warrants against Mohammad Ihsan, sentenced to death in August 2006 for the murders of Meraj Bano, 25-year-old wife of Qamar Ahmed, and her two-year-old daughter Shafiqa.
Justice Abdul Ghafoor Memon of the ATC-II issued directives that the prisoner be hanged at 4.30am on Aug 15, 2007, in the Central Prison Karachi.
The crime was committed on June 23, 2000, in the limits of the Orangi Town police station. According to the prosecution, Ihsan, son of Mohammed Suleman, also injured two other daughters of Qamar Ahmed, six-year-old Sidra and seven-year-old Subia, before fleeing.
Police said that both parties were relatives and had an old enmity.
A case was registered (FIR No 211/2000) under Sections 302, 324, 337-i and 337-f of the Pakistan Penal Code in the Orangi Town police station.
Subsequently, Ihsan was arrested on June 27, 2000.
He was awarded life imprisonment and the death sentence on Aug 10, 2000, by ATC-II judge Abdul Hameed Abro.
Ihsan submitted an appeal against the verdict in the Sindh High Court, which was rejected on January 22, 2003. A subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court of Pakistan was rejected on February 16, 2004. As a last resort, Ihsan appealed to the president of Pakistan but his mercy appeal (No 337/05) was rejected on June 16, 2007, after which the ATC-II judge scheduled the execution.
Cop killing case
An anti-terrorism court on Saturday recorded the statement of a Malir judicial magistrate (JM), appearing as a prosecution witness in a case concerning the killing of a police official, and fixed August 18 as the date of the next proceedings.
Ghulam Ali A. Samtio of the ATC-I recorded the statement of JM Mohammed Hussein Durrani, who had conducted an identification parade of the men accused of the crime: Mohammed Farhan Qureshi, Mohammed Farhan and Kamran. They are facing charges of murdering police sub-inspector Ghulam Ghaus on October 13, 2006.
In his statement, JM Durrani confirmed the identity of the accused, who had been identified during an identification parade conducted in his court.
According to the prosecution, the victim had been in uniform and was making his way home when the accused, riding a motorcycle, fired indiscriminately at him at the Quaidabad Bridge. The victim was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
