Shujaat rules out alliance with PPP: No harm in contacts

ISLAMABAD, July 31: Pakistan Muslim League President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Tuesday ruled out the formation of an alliance with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) saying that the PPP would be the main opponent of the PML in the next elections.
Talking to newsmen after the launching ceremony of PML’s senior vice president Gohar Ayub Khan’s book ‘Glimpses into the Corridors of Power’ here, he said the general elections would be held in January 2008.
Responding to a question about the meeting between President General Pervez Musharraf and PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto in Abu Dhabi, he said there was no harm in maintaining contacts with different parties.
Asked if he would accept Ms Bhutto as prime minister, he said the party which wins majority seats in the elections will form the government.
He said the indirect contacts with political parties was not something new and had been taking place in the past as well. He replied in the negative when asked if the government was in contact with PML (N) leader and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
He ruled out any threat to the government and said neither the government nor the prime minister was being changed. He said Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz would hold the office till an interim government was formed to conduct general elections.
Answering a question about the military uniform of President Musharraf, he said the issue would be decided in accordance with the Constitution.
He stressed the need for a national approach on issues of national importance and said all the political parties should work together to deal with the challenges facing the country. He said he was ready to convene a roundtable conference, if other political parties agreed, to discuss problems and the way forward.
