LAHORE, July 30: Bay mare Royal Fish won the feature event of the day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday evening. Backed as joint favourite along with colt The Senator, Royal Fish picked up speed gradually to defeat filly Simbi by half a length though Royal Fish was at third place, behind The Senator and Simbi, at 600 metres.
The Senator, who fought well over 900 metres mark, buckled up under pressure to finish third, another three-fourth of length behind. Gelding Philosopher completed the frame among seven starters.
The trio of Syed Abbas Mehdi (owner), M. Afzal (trainer) and Shahid Rehman (jockey) was a perfect support for Royal Fish to overshadow all rivals.
Three-year-old colt The Senator is trained by Khadim Hussain, who had recently taken up the job from Haji Ghulam Sarwar.
A race earlier, nine-year-old gelding Moj Mayla showed astonishing turn of foot and won the supporting and fifth event of the day. He beat another gelding Volcano, ridden by Shahid Rehman, by about four lengths.
The most impressive runner was nine-year-old mare Royal Victory in the third race. Backed at 60 to 100 favourite, Royal Victory, who had been off the racing scene since June 3, made a triumphant return on the track.
She beat colt Ahsan The Great by three-and-a-half lengths with Cheeku Khan occupying third place.
Trainer Mohammad Afzal broke his duck on trainers’ victory statistics table, saddling home two winners, Royal Victory and Royal Fish. The former is also owned by Syed Abbas Mehdi.
Bay filly Mahima won the opener meant for unregistered ponies defeating Usman Prince by three-fourth of a length.
Mere Lal finished a close third.
Long shot High Hope won the second race comfortably from Nawa-i-Sehar. Tosca and My Shanga completed the board putting up a dismal show.
Long shot bay filly Run For Dollar won the fourth race in style of her own. Pretty Prince and First Dream, the first and second favourite in turf-accountants’ ring, did not put up a show that was expected from them.
All the races were contested over 1,000 metres except the opener which was run over 900 metres.
