KARACHI, July 30: The high-profile three-day Jashn-i-Ghalib, which was scheduled to start early next month, has been postponed and rescheduled after Eidul Fitr, organisers said.
“We have rescheduled the event due to some unavoidable circumstances,” Tanvir Kazmi, secretary of Bazm-i-Ghalib, which is organising the event along with Ghalib Institute Delhi, told Dawn.
Under an agreement between Bazm-i-Ghalib Pakistan and Ghalib Institute Delhi, the two countries would jointly hold Jashn-i-Ghalib every year alternately in Pakistan and India.
Sources, however, said that the event was actually postponed due to the recent spate of suicide bombings in the country. It is learnt that the postponement was decided after the organisers in both the countries agreed on the same.
Under the programme, prominent research scholars will present their papers, which will be compiled and sent to the premier libraries across the world.
When the event will take place in Pakistan, Ghalib Award will be conferred on an Indian scholar while a Pakistan scholar will be awarded with the same honour when the event will be held in India.
Noted Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh was scheduled to arrive in Karachi to perform at the inaugural ceremony of the Jashn-i-Ghalib on Aug 2.
