KARACHI, July 29: Three-year-old chestnut filly Love Pakistan sprang a surprise when she outpaced favourite filly Rebecca by two lengths to make it two on the trot in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.
The public fancy Rebecca started off well and was in the lead after negotiating the bend and getting into straight for home when its rider Arshad had difficulty in handling the mount after the saddle slipped.
Running on its heels, Love Pakistan, with jockey Essa astride, took full advantage of the situation and overtook her to claim honours.
Bay filly Green Rose finished four lengths behind to secure third spot while seven-year-old bay Rokara completed the frame.
Three owners-cum-trainers had an eventful day. Besides Sher Mohammad whose Love Pakistan returned with flying colours, other who met with success were Ameer Ahmed (Paidagiree) and S. Ehtisham (Tharkyee).
Predictions about mare Paidagiree came true when rider Zulfiqar Ali powered her to two lengths victory over filly Breaking News in the second race while Ghulam Shabbir II presented Ehtisham with a winner when he galloped second favourite Tharkyee to a facile six-and-a-half lengths victory in the concluding race which was also the feature event.
Earlier, tried by connection, 11-year-old mare Priceless from the stables of Pir Pagara claimed her maiden win galloping to convincing 12 lengths victory over Shah Sawar in the opener.
Second favourite mare Smiling Face picked up spoils in the third edging Make Millions by five lengths as favourite On Looker finished off the board.
Thanks Naeem, a 10-year-old chestnut, got the better of Shah Pasand by one-and-a-half lengths after Quince and Sugar Sweet were not on job. Both were opened favourites in view of their chances but not backed by connection and Thanks Naeem became odds on favourite.
Jockey Ghulam Shabbir II had a brace of winners in back-to-back races. Apart from Tharkyee, his other winner was mare Voo Doo Doll who won as she pleased beating Khyber by 11 lengths in a smart time of one min 9 1/5 sec.Jawan Bakht who completed the board lodged an objection again third placed Jack In The Box for deliberately blocking his way. The objection was upheld and the positions of third and fourth horses were reversed.
The administrator also cancelled the licence of rider of Jack In The Box Mumtaz Ali besides imposing a fine of Rs20,000.
