Banks’ deposits decline by Rs10287 billion


According to the weekly statement of position of all scheduled banks for the week ended July 14, 2007, deposits and other accounts of the scheduled banks stood at Rs3,378.399 billion, lower by Rs10.707 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs3,389.106 billion.

Commercial banks deposits showed a fall of Rs10.297 billion over the week to Rs3,366.138 billion, against preceding week’s Rs3,376.435 billion. Speciaised banks deposits stood at Rs12.260 billion, against preceding week’s Rs12.671 billion, a fall of Rs0.411 billion.

Borrowings by all scheduled banks increased during the week over preceding week’s figure.

It rose to Rs417.409 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs415.679 billion, a rise of Rs1.73 billion.

This was primarily due to a rise in the borrowings by commercial banks, which rose to Rs335.997 billion against previous week’s Rs334.277 billion, or by Rs1.72 billion. Borrowings by specialised banks stood at Rs81.412 billion, against preceding week’s figure of Rs81.402 billion, a rise of Rs0.01 billion.

Gross advances stood at Rs2,434.669 billion in the week under review, a decline of Rs19.945 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs2,454.614 billion.

Advances by commercial banks declined to Rs2,339.935 billion against earlier week’s figure of Rs2,360.108 billion, or by Rs20.173 billion. Advances of specialized banks stood at Rs94.734 billion, higher by Rs0.228 million over earlier week’s figure of Rs94.506.

Investments of all scheduled banks increased in the week by Rs1.114 billion to Rs1,132.511 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs1,131.397 billion. Commercial banks investment rose to Rs1,120.916 billion, from earlier week’s Rs1,119.650 billion, larger by Rs1.266 billion. Specialised banks investment stood at Rs11.595 billion, against preceding week’s Rs11.747 billion, a decline by Rs0.152 billion

Cash and balances with treasury banks of all scheduled banks declined by Rs1.638 billion during the week to stand at Rs348.498 billion against earlier week’s Rs350.136 billion. The figure for commercial banks stood at Rs345.984 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs347.463 billion, a fall of Rs1.479 billion.

Total assets of scheduled banks stood at Rs4,534.389 billion, lower by Rs11.499 billion, over preceding week’s figure of Rs4,545.888 billion. Meanwhile, commercial banks assets stood at Rs4,418.948 billion, smaller by Rs10.889 billion over previous week’s figure of Rs4,429.837 billion. Specialized banks assets fell to Rs115.441 billion, or by Rs0.609 billion over previous week’s Rs116.050 billion.
