EC to launch another voter registration exercise

ISLAMABAD, July 28: The Secretary of the Election Commission, Mr Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad, on Saturday directed provincial election commissioners to immediately work out modalities for undertaking another exercise to register voters through a fresh door-to-door campaign.

The move was in compliance with an order issued by the Supreme Court on July 26 asking the commission to ensure the registration of all eligible voters through a fresh and comprehensive scheme by convening a special meeting.

The Supreme Court had issued the instruction on a petition filed by People’s Party chief Benazir Bhutto.

In the petition, the PPP leader had challenged the new voter lists and accused the government of committing `instituionalised fraud’ with the nation by deleting over 22 million voters from the electoral rolls.

The Supreme Court had observed that the new voter lists would disenfranchise millions of people across the country.

At a meeting of the Election Commission on Saturday, Mr Dilshad asked the provincial election commissioners to submit their proposals and suggestions for approval.

He said these proposals and suggestions would be reviewed at the next meeting of the commission on August 1.

Mr Dilshad said that Saturday's emergency meeting was held in compliance with an order of the Supreme Court and on the directive of the Chief Election Commissioner.

“We have started our work in compliance with the Supreme Court's directive,” he stated.—APP
