TV channels get Pemra notices

ISLAMABAD, July 28: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has issued notices to some private television channels for airing gory scenes of incidents of violence.

“Notices have been issued to private TV channels for transmitting bloodshed and gory scenes in violation of the code of conduct,” a spokesman for Pemra said, adding that these channels had been warned of strict legal action in case of repeat of violation of the respective Pemra provisions specified in the ordinance, code of conduct and licence terms and conditions.

The spokesman said the action had been taken in deference to the public sentiments and sensitivities and to ensure compliance with the code of ethics and conduct.

Several news channels, he said, had been airing shocking footage of corpses, beheaded, dismembered and mutilated bodies in bomb explosions and other gory and violent scenes in their news coverage.

“Such footage of incidents is shown on the screens again and again on most TV channels,” he added.

Pemra says that the airing of these images glorified terrorism and aroused fear in society.
