ISLAMABAD, July 28: Fifty-eight people have contacted the Ministry of Interior for recovery of their relatives who went missing during the Lal Masjid operation, and DNA test reports of the 62 people buried as unidentified are awaited.

This information was provided by interior secretary Syed Kamal Shah at a meeting of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, Pakistan Muslim League president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, secretary-general Mushahid Hussain Syed and other leaders with parents and relatives of the missing people at the Prime Minister’s House on Saturday.

Officials said each case was being thoroughly examined so there was no chance of any mistake in identifying the missing people. They hoped that the DNA tests would help identify some of the missing people.

The interior secretary, who briefed the meeting about steps taken for early identification of the missing people, said students who had left the Lal Masjid-Jamia Hafsa complex on July 3 had not been registered because the area had then not been cordoned off. Those who came out of the complex later were registered and their number was around 1,200. Except for 46, all students had been released, he said.

Speaking to the delegation, the prime minister said the government was making efforts to locate and identify the missing people and would continue helping the parents and guardians till the last person was located and identified.

During the meeting, instructions were issued to authorities to arrange the visit of the parents to the Adiala jail where 46 students are kept.
