KARACHI, July 27: A division bench of the Sindh High Court comprising Justice Maqbool Baqar and Justice Nadeem Azhar Siddiqui on Friday granted interim pre-arrest bail to a former additional medical superintendent of the Civil Hospital Karachi, Capt (r) Dr Mirza Raza Ali till Sept 9 against a surety of Rs500,000.

It also issued a notice to the National Accountability Bureau, Sindh, chairman and DPG for the same date.

Captain Raza Ali is being tried for allegedly misappropriating the CHK’s Zakat funds.

His counsel, Anwer Tariq, submitted that the former CHK official was arrested on October 5, 2006 and acquitted by the Accountability Court Karachi. He said that NAB had not registered any case against his client so far. However, he maintained, his client was served a notice for a plea bargain, proposing him to return Rs13.377 million.

The counsel submitted that the NAB notice was illegal and without jurisdiction.—PPI
